“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. By their fruits you shall know them.” – Matthew 7:15-16
I am sure you have seen the viral “Christian” video of “Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus”. If not here it is:
Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus || Spoken Word
There are many problems with this poem which I will touch upon a couple.
This message isn’t new. This is a disturbing and growing false teaching that is spreading across the Evangelical world and is creeping into other Christian sects, including the Church Christ founded – the holy Catholic Church. The major problem is that this message puts the individual ahead of Christ by disregarding the divine authority Christ gave to His Church. That all we need is to have a relationship with Christ and interpret the Bible any way we see fit (which usually means it doesn’t impose on your current lifestyle). Why change when Jesus loves us the way we are? Right? … WRONG. We are not merely called to be friends with Christ but rather we are to be like Christ – more Christlike!
By saying that “Jesus hates religion and so I hate religion too” is not only a dangerous teaching that will lead many astray, but it is also false. Christ doesn’t hate religion. He hates sin.
If there is no divine earthly appointed authority to let you know if you have erred and your salvation is in danger, who will? Christ did love religion and established his own “And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.” – Matthew 16:18-19
Christ also told his disciples to obey those who are the head of their religion “The scribes and the Pharisees have sitten on the chair of Moses. All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do: but according to their works do ye not; for they say, and do not.” – Matthew 23:2-3
So one has to ask why hate religion? Jesus did not hate religion but rather the religious hypocrites. The problem is that religion puts Christ first, where this notion of loving Christ and that is all that you need puts the individual ahead of Christ. The song should really be called “Why I hate religion, but love myself”.
The one thing I find is comforting is that all the responses against this video seem to be from young people and young priests. God Bless them!
We must be a witness to the Truth! Our Church is our Mother and when we see our Mother being attacked we must defend her honor and uphold the Truth!
