We often don’t take much notice in the small thing in life, especially when it comes to the daily small actions and events that occur. However, if we stop to think about it, it is the small things that have a big impact on our day. It also says a lot about our character.
For instance, a smile from someone, a compliment or small positive action can change our day into a good one. Similarly, all the small annoying things we do to our loved ones can also colour their day into a bad one.
The same is true with our spiritual life. The small things we do for love of Christ is not insignificant (even though there might be days where we think to the contrary). The prime example of doing small things with great love was St. Thérèse de Lisieux. Similarly, we might think that our small vices are insignificant (like eating too much, swearing, watching garbage on the TV, wasting time on the internet/phones, etc.) but if we do not have our small vices under control what makes us think that we can overcome the larger temptations in life?
It is often said that venial sin is the gateway to mortal sin. That “when through excess the soul is made sick with venial sin” (St. Francis de Sales).
I would like to leave you with two quotes from St. Francis de Sales that will bring comfort and encouragement while you tackle the small vices in your life:
“Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. Do not lose courage in considering your own imperfections, but instantly set about remedying them — every day begin the task anew.”
“Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset.”
May you conquer the small things in life so when the big things show up you are prepared to withstand them, with the Grace of God.
