Today we celebrate the feast of St. Francis Xavier, who was one of the greatest missionaries of the Christian faith bringing the Gospel to India, South East Asia, and Japan. Some say he is second to only St. Paul in his missionary work.
St. Francis was compelled by his love of Christ to share his faith with all peoples. During this time of Advent and through Christmas we are given this great opportunity to bring Christ to our family, friends and co-workers over gatherings, parties and meals.
Some ways to bring the beauty of the Faith during this season are:
- FOCUS on your family culture
The Catholic way of celebrating Christmas is second to none because Christmas is Catholic! Include your family traditions and discover lost or forgotten Catholic traditions for Advent and Christmas. Don’t hold back.[i]
- DON’T waste your time correcting
Is it “Merry Christmas” or something else? Is it “Christmas” or “Christ’s Mass?” Correcting others on these things never works to change hearts. YOU speak about Christmas and Jesus etc. and they will catch on when they are ready. [ii]
- REMIND them gently
Our friends around us have literally forgotten that Christmas is a Christian thing. So remind them gently. “What do you have planned for the holidays?” your co-worker asks. “Well these are holy days for us Catholics, so it is going to be pretty special.”[iii]
- Keeping Christ in Christmas starts with you
Always keep Christ the centre. I saw a poster that read, “Want to Keep Christ in Christmas? Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, forgive the guilty, welcome the stranger and the unwanted child, care for the ill, love your enemies and go to Mass.” How true.
May your love for Christ grow during this Advent season and may that love compel you to share Christ with others.
St. Francis Xavier, pray for us!
