josemaria_escriva - smallWritten By: Fr. Jason Kuntz,

St. Josemaria Escriva was born in Barbastro, Spain, January 9th 1902.   As a young man he was inspired by the sacrifice of Carmelite priests in his hometown and chose to give his life to God as a priest.  On October 2, 1928, while on retreat, God gave him an inspiration of man of all ages, classes and professions discovering holiness in their everyday life.   He began sharing this possibility of sanctifying ones work with university students in Madrid.  During the Spanish Civil war, he risked his life to continue his apostolate with young men and was forced to escape the city.  After the war, his apostolate was able to continue at a greater pace and Opus Dei expanded throughout Spain, and the world.  St. Josemaria Escriva died in Rome on June 26th, 1975 while looking upon an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. St. Josemaria was canonized on October 6th, 2002.  His liturgical memorial is celebrated on June 26th.

In the Diocese of Hamilton, we will commemorate the Feast of St. Josemaria Escriva with a Mass celebrated by Father Gary Schlack on Saturday June 23rd at 10:30am at Annunciation of our Lord Parish, 280 Limeridge Road West, Hamilton.  Confessions will be heard starting at 10:00am.

Please join us to implore the intercession of this modern saint of ordinary life.   The times and locations of Masses celebrated in other dioceses throughout Canada can be found here.
