It’s very easy for us to state with no doubt that we believe in God. But have we truly taken a moment to think about what those words mean? It is one thing to know that God exists and believe in Him, but another to BELONG to Him. As Catholics and Children of God, we are called to rise beyond just mere belief, we are called to belong and to live!
If we take a look at our lifestyle, our daily routine, our priorities and values, do they reflect that we belong to God? Do they truly reflect that statement of belief that we so confidently state?
Living the “Double-Life” is a place that I know many of us can relate to. I’ve been there, I’m sure you have as well. Being one person when you go to church on Sunday or at Youth Group meetings or retreats, and then a completely different person at school, work or with friends. The problem with this is we are living in a lie. We pretend one way and then pretend the other way. Which one is the truth? Keeping up this double-life not only becomes confusing but more so exhausting. We feel lost or feel like we are constantly falling, and eventually slip into doubt thinking that nothing is working. But the question becomes, what are we TRULY changing? St.John reminds us in Revelations, “so, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth” (Revelations 3:16). We can’t expect to grow in our faith if we don’t CHANGE the lifestyle we live in. When we proclaim that we are Catholic, that we are Children of God, it means that our lifestyles should very strongly reflect that. It’s not enough just to say “I believe” or “I accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour”. Yes, that is the first step, but now we have to LIVE IT. When we enter into any new stage of life, like marriage or becoming a parent for example, our lifestyle has to change to reflect that. A married couple can’t live their life like a single person would; their lifestyle and priorities change to reflect their life in the vocation of marriage. It is no different in our faith. Being Catholic is more than a label or certificate we get, it’s a way of life or more so it IS our life.
Take a look at how you use your time, your finances or what you set as a priority in your daily routine. Bring more awareness to how you act in different settings as well and if your actions truly reflect your identity as a Child of God. Our actions speak a louder language than our words. It is through our actions that we share with the world and show them who we truly belong to. The world will know we are Christ’s disciples by how we act and share God’s love.
So whom do you belong to? Do you belong to God or to the world?
Praying for you all!
