The other day I was sitting in my car and reflecting on the joyful mysteries. And that’s when it hit me, this unbelievable understanding of Mary’s completely submission to the Will of God. Now we may know this, we see she was loyal to the Will of God in the way that she said “Yes” to be the Mother of God. But let’s take a little closer look at this complete submission to His Will and learn from her.
When God called Mary to do His Will, she was a young girl, and she was ready from that moment to submit her life to Him. Look at the magnificat for a second.
My soul magnifies the Lord
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
Because He has regarded the lowliness of His handmaid;
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed;
Because He who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is His name;
And His mercy is from generation to generation
on those who fear Him.
He has shown might with His arm,
He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and has exalted the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich He has sent away empty.
He has given help to Israel, his servant, mindful of His mercy
Even as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity forever.
Look at the beauty of Mary’s words here. “My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour. “ The Mother of God, knew she was handpicked by God, from “the lowliness of His handmaid”. Mary didn’t see herself as superior or someone superb, she was a lowly handmaid who only wanted to do the Will of God. And even when she knew that she was to be the Mother of God she didn’t boast in this, she said that we will call her blessed because of GOD, not because of who she is.
She completely submitted to His Will. She was a young girl, who didn’t grow up rich, and didn’t have very much to offer God. But He took that and He made it a holy offering to Himself.
God calls us to be humble before Him, to submit to His Will just as our Mother did. We need to constantly ask for the graces to be able to completely offer up our lives to Christ.
“…may it be done unto me, according to Your word.” This should be the motto of our lives.
As this is the month of Mary, maybe we should take this time to truly grow in virtue to be more like our Mother. Let us reflect on our lives and think:
Do we humble ourselves before God?
Do we submit to the will of God?
Do we give up control?
Do we live the life that is in pursuit of holiness?
If we desire holiness (which is something every person is called to be), the only way to do that is to submit to the Will of God. There should be no fear in this, because our Lord’s plan is never to harm us, actually quite the opposite. If we submit to the Will of God, we too shall be blessed. The Lord only wants us to be happy, and He is the way to true happiness.
I ask you to truly reflect on your life and on your submission to our Lord. Pray the joyful mysteries today, and see our Holy Mother’s “Yes” to the Lord. Use her as your guide in this world. Just like our earthly mother (and even more so), Mary wants the very best for her children. She wants us to one day be with her Son.
