As a priest whenever I vent about lack of decorum at Mass a common response is always given “Do you really think God cares how we dress in Church? Does he really care how we hold our hands to receive Communion? “
No doubt God is patient with our foibles and imperfections. However, it is very different to imply that these matters are unimportant or irrelevant.
Today we celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We celebrate the fact that our Lady was preserved from the taint of original sin, that she possessed the fullness of grace. When God chose to send His son to earth he did not chose any woman – he reserved the pinnacle of his creation – our Blessed Mother – to be the one to bear him for us. God our Father preserved the Blessed Virgin Mary from sin so that she could be “a worthy dwelling” for His son, Jesus Christ.
When we receive Holy Communion, the same Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus, which came to dwell in Mary’s womb, comes to dwell in each of us. If God cared enough to prepare a perfect Mother for his son – should we not care enough to prepare ourselves to be a worthy dwelling for him?
