Say it again. Christ the King. Not Christ a King, but Christ THE King.

Saying these words helps me to understand that Christ is the King of the world, of the universe. I need this reminder as it seems our world has lost focus of who is truly the King of us all- whether we acknowledge it or not.

Rather than paying homage to The King, as good subjects do, a quick examination of our society seems to have reversed the roles; we have put ourselves on the throne, and are demanding that God pay homage to us.

And how’s that all working out of us? Has our society become better off by ignoring or banalizing The King? By replacing The King with ourselves?

Our King grants us life, peace, love, and freedom. What have we managed to do in our society? We have ushered in death (abortion, euthanasia), war, hate, and slavery (communism, fascism etc.)

In my political work, I always see so many clamoring to become the kings, or queen, or whatever gender neutral noun should be inserted here. But as Christ Himself explained in the Gospel- no one can serve two masters.

So who is your king?

Let me conclude with the lyrics for one of the great hymns for this great feast:

To Jesus Christ, our Sov’reign King,
Who is the world’s salvation,
All praise and homage do we bring,
And thanks and adoration.

Christ Jesus Victor, Christ Jesus Ruler!
Christ Jesus, Lord and Redeemer!

Thy reign extend, O King benign,
To ev’ry land and nation,
For in Thy kingdom, Lord divine,
Alone we find salvation.

Christ Jesus Victor, Christ Jesus Ruler!
Christ Jesus, Lord and Redeemer!

To Thee and to Thy Church, great King,
We pledge our hearts’ oblation,
Until before Thy throne we sing,
In endless jubilation.
