Theresa and I have been on quite the journey these past 8 months. Many people have been asking us why we changed our ministry’s name and if Catholic Chapter House still exists.
We apologize that we have not had the time to explain all the changes that have been happening thus far and we hope this post clarifies things.
Why the name change?
We changed our ministry’s name from Catholic Chapter House to Serviam Ministries to better reflect the work that we do in the Catholic community. We are here to serve Christ and His Church and we thought the name change is appropriate.
What does “Serviam” mean?
“Serviam” is Latin for “I will serve”. This was the cry of St. Michael the Archangel as a response to Lucifer’s “I will not serve” (Non Serviam) when God put the angels to the test.
Many Catholics use the term “Serviam” as a prayer in the morning which emphasizes our willingness to love and serve God each day.
What happened to Catholic Chapter House?
Catholic Chapter House has “morphed” into Serviam Ministries. The family behind the ministry is the same (David, Theresa Gilbert and the kids) but the focus is slightly different.
Ever since we started in 2010 it has been our goal to serve Christ and His Church. There is a great need for catechesis and evangelization both within and outside the Church. Initially we felt the best way to do this was to make Catholic publications and resources more accessible. Now we feel that the Holy Spirit is calling us to take a new approach that focuses on content (videos, blogs), events and outreach – a more human encounter.
Less people (especially youth) are in our parishes… but they are online. Less people, both young and old, are investing in their faith by buying books… but they are searching, reading and watching things about faith online. Less people feel connected at their parish… but many look forward to and enjoy connecting at events – creating a community of like-minded Catholics on fire for Christ and His Church.
What’s the purpose /mission of Serviam Ministries?
Our ultimate goal is to build the Kingdom of God by bringing people into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. We do that by:
- Creating a forum where Catholics and people of good will can learn about the faith, grow in the faith and share the Gospel with others.
- Making connections with people whether it is online through videos, blogs and social media or in person at a conference, talk or on the streets.
Pope Francis said, “I prefer a church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security”. And that is exactly what Theresa and I intend to do…
We are excited to see what God has in store for Serviam Ministries. Thank you to all those who have supported us during this challenging and exciting time!
