girl watching tv - smallWritten By: David Gilbert

Since high school I have been into electronic/ techno music. In university I was a part of an international electronic dance website and for a year I was “DJ Davey G” with the “Electronic Hour” on Thursday nights on my university campus.

Now that I have kids I don’t have time for music anymore, however, I do still listen to it from time to time. The other week I was listening to a few songs and I was struck by the message within them. The message was that we have lost our human connection.

We are connected more than ever before thanks to smartphones, tablets and computers but no one is connecting. We are more alone and isolated than ever.

We are social creatures. God has created us to be in community with others, yet our sense of community (at least in the real world) is declining. Even at the parish level, you can go to Mass and not meet a soul despite people being there.

The internet is a great place to connect and meet likeminded people, however, it is no substitute to true community. We still need that human connection. We need that smile, that touch, the other’s presence… we need Christ and we need to be Christ to others.

We need to get out there are connect on the human element level. Everybody needs to know somebody who cares. Be the builders of community and re-connect with those in your life and neighbourhood – in so doing you will also be bringing Christ to others.

I will leave you with the lyrics (and I encourage you to listen to the song) below to “Alone” by Armin van Buuren feat. Lauren Evans. I believe it speaks to what is written deep within our hearts of our connection to each other and to our Creator.

“Everyone is walking on the edge of life
Like a ghost of a shadow, barely alive
Even times in a rush
But its going nowhere

Everyones connected but no one is connecting
The human element has long been missing
Tell me, have you seen it?
Have you seen it?

Or are we alone?
‘Cause I need something to believe in
Tell me, are we alone?
Where is the life? Where is the feeling?
Is anybody out there?
Is anyone listening?
Is anyone left in this whole world?
Or are we alone?
Alone

Where is the feeling?
Alone
Where is the feeling?

Everybody needs to know
Somebody who cares.
Just a friendly face
You can trust to be there.
Are you afraid to be known
And not be a stranger?

Cause everyone’s connected but no one is connecting
The human element has long been missing
Tell me, have you seen it?
Have you seen it?

Or are we alone?
‘Cause I need something to believe in
Tell me, are we alone?
Where is the life? Where is the feeling?
Is anybody out there?
Is anyone listening?
Is anyone left in this whole world?
Or are we alone?
Alone

Is anyone left in this whole world?
Or are we alone?”
